Our Classes

There are four levels of classes. These are Beginner (split into two in semester 2), Novice and Advanced Technique (scroll below to read about each). You don't need a partner for any of the classes. Make sure your membership covers the class you're coming to, however if you're unsure about trying out a higher category, you are welcome to pay a single-class fee to try it out before committing to a membership.

To participate in classes, you'll need to purchase the correct membership. You can read about how to do that here - MEMBERSHIP

Beginner Classes

As of January 2023 there are two Beginners groups: New Beginners is for anyone who hasn't ever danced ballroom & latin before. Progressing Beginners is for dancers who were here in semester 1.
Note:
  • If you are a progressing beginner but would like to attend the New Beginners group, you can do so.
  • Equally if you are a new beginner and want to push your ability, or if you have previous dance experience, you can attend the Progressing beginners group as well as the New Beginners.
  • Existing annual Beginner membership covers only one class level (either New or Progressing), so if you'd like to attend both, you must pay for an upgrade (see Membership page)

The Beginner Class is perfect for people who are completely new to Ballroom and Latin dancing or for improvers who want a relaxed fun time dancing.

We teach the Waltz, Quickstep, Cha cha cha and Jive regularly, along with workshops throughout the year on other dances. The beginner classes will also introduce you to the timings of each dance, skills in leading and following and position in hold.

These classes aim to teach you the basic steps and technique of the dances we teach. If you're very keen on progressing or you have prior dance experience, you can further build on these skills in the Novice class.

Novice classes

The Novice class is for dancers keen to push themselves.
There is no strict required experience level. If you have prior dance experience then it will help, but if you're fully committed to train regularly and learn, then even complete beginners are most welcome to come. However, if you are a beginner, you will be expected to learn and practice all the routines taught in beginners class to attend this. It is taught by professional teachers. In this class, you will be taught a routine made up of novice (restricted) steps, which are suitable for competing at novice level. More technique will be introduced as well.

Advanced Technique classes

This class is for members who have danced competitively in the past (i.e. have approximately 1 or more years of experience and are currently dancing at Novice or above), and are committed to regular training.

The Advanced class is taught by professional teachers, who will use their vast knowledge to push the members' understanding of Ballroom and Latin and to improve them as dancers. There will be a strong focus on technique, frame, presentation and other aspects of competitive dancing.

The Advanced Technique class is not suitable for beginners as it relies on the members having good knowledge of Novice steps so that this foundation can be built upon.
